This song is dedicated to the Madonnina, the golden Virgin Mary statue placed on top of the highest spire of the Milan Dome. It is surely the most widely known Milanese symbol.
| A disen: "La canzon la nass a Napoli", e certament gh'hann minga tutt i tòrt, Surriento, Margellina, tutt i pòpoli i avrann cantàa almen on milion de vòlt. Esageren, me par, on ciccinin... O mia bella Madonnina ... Sì, vegnì senza paura, numm ve slungarem la man: tutt el mond l'è on gran paes - e semm d'accord! - ma Milan l'è on gran Milan! |
It is said: "Music is born in Neaples" and they are surely partly right. Sorrento, Mergellina have been sung by everybody about a million times. I hope no one will take offence, if we speak a little bit about us. Oh my beautiful Madonnina, who shine from far away, golden and minute, You dominate Milan beneath you life is lived, no one is never lazy. Everybody sings: "You cannot live far from Naples", but they all gather in Milan! Now there is the song of "magic Rome" about Nina, the Cupolone, Rugantino. Somebody throws himself in the Tiber: "Tragic Rome!" They exaggerate, it seems, a little bit... Let's hope it won't come the mania of singing: "My Malano*"... Oh my beautiful Madonnina ... Oh yes, come all without fear, we will stretch out our hands: the whole world is but a village - and we agree! - but Milan is a great Milan! |
* Malano is the typical way Neapolitans pronounce "Milano"
